Vital industry learning and connections

Last week members of the Return on Science Investment Committees were welcomed to Wellington. Return on Science Committees give researchers the opportunity to present their work to a group of experts who then provide recommendations to further accelerate the research and its commercial prospects.

Two of the four Return on Science Committees - the Physical Sciences and the Digital Technologies Committees - came to Wellington to provide feedback on research and innovation being produced right here in the region. Viclink presented two well-received projects to the Digital Technologies committee.

In addition to the valuable feedback received on our projects, attending these committees also give our newer staff the opportunity to engage with industry and understand many of the drivers at play when assessing research ideas for further investment.

Recent Viclink recruits, Analysts Mick Riley and Samuel Wojcik attended the Return on Science Committees, along with Viclink intern Grace Esterman, giving them an opportunity meet a range of people with different experience in New Zealand commercialisation. “It gave me a great introduction to both the people and projects that are currently being developed within the New Zealand commercialisation ecosystem,” Sam explained.

Grace also found the process valuable, “It was incredible how the Committee combined their knowledge to generate individual feedback for each project to grow and develop,” she said. Meanwhile, Mick was surprised by the range of innovative projects covered, “I enjoyed the wide variety of innovation we saw at Return on Science, with each project focusing on a different innovative sector of science.”
